Viktor Tóth – Budapest, Hungary
"Viktor Tóth is one of the most versatile figures in Hungarian jazz. Through his music, Tóth can express himself as a rambunctious post-bop virtuoso (for example, in the Tóth Viktor Tercett) or as a spiritual guide for the soul as in the Arura Trio." said the press when reviewing his 2007 Climbing with Mountains, which, incidentally, won best jazz album of the same year.
His newest albums, called "but inside" and the seventh one called "Lamu" also won the best jazz album prize in Hungary. Viktor Tóth earned the title “jazzman of the year” and “jazz composer of the year” several times. Despite this, he still sees himself as a truth seeker and with his musical endeavors seeks to reach oneness with universal harmony. As Tóth has played with such internationally renowned musicians as Hamid Drake (drums), Henry Franklin (bass), William Parker (bass), John Betsch (drums), Erik Allen (drums), Piotr Wojtasik (trumpet) and Mihaly Dresch (sax), he has garnered respect as a peer and has grown as a musician from these collaborations. His musical expression is dynamic, yet sensitive and he strives to capture the energy of the moment with every performance. He has played throughout Europe, India and the United States in various jazz festivals. He leads his own Tóth Viktor Tercett, he composes his own material, leads workshops for youngsters, he produces music for contemporary dance performances and he collects folk music… He is always looking to forge ahead in new directions.
"If we would have a classification of jazz musicians, like they have in the United States, the alto saxophonist Viktor Tóth would be undoubtedly the first on his instrument. Besides being an excellent composer – he performs his own pieces on his new album, too – he’s a creative artist who invents new projects every six months."
"Viktor Tóth, a virtuoso alto player who is said to be the most exciting saxophonist on the Hungarian scene."
"Tóth, with a light touch in phrasing and at home in the lower register despite being an alto-player, demonstrates a well-established serious interplay with his fellow musicians. His sound and phrasing, as well as his highly idiosyncratic compositions are deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while, at the same time, he pays close attention to the musical world of the Balkans."
